Lipoproteins are macromolecular complexes that takes cholesterol and triglycerides through the blood stream. The secretion of lipoproteins occurs in the liver and small intestine, but most of modifications and transformations takes place in the plasma. Plasma levels of cholesterol and triglycerides are changed by environmental effects on lipid metabolism or by genetic factors affecting both enzymes in plasma and apoproteins. Abnormalities of the lipoprotein transport system can increase a person’s risk for developing atherosclerosis
