Rubella Virus

A positive IgM antibody result indicates a probable past or present infection. A positive IgM result at the onset of illness may indicate that the patient had exposure quite a month ago and/or may have occurred years before this current illness. IgM levels in two blood samples drawn 2-3 weeks apart if shows increasing trend may indicates present infection. Rubella IgM avidity is predicated on the maturation of IgM subclasses from weak binding IgM antibodies to strong binding IgM antibodies. Avidity is that the strength of binding of antibodies to antigen. That is, avidity increases over time. By measuring the avidity of IgM antibodies, it is often determined if the infection was fairly recent or not.
